Sales Tax Software Pricing Index 2026

What published list prices actually cost in year one, modeled at 1, 3, 5, 10 and 25 filing states. Only prices the vendors publish themselves — where a vendor publishes nothing, this study says so.

How much does sales tax software cost per year?

It depends far less on the sticker price than on the pricing model. From published list prices, a seller filing monthly in 10 states would pay $2,388 a year on a flat per-organization plan, $6,990 on a per-state entry tier, $6,000 on per-market pricing, and $6,368 on a subscription plus per-filing credits. Vertex does not publish a price at all. Every figure is list price as published on 2026-08-23, before negotiation.

Modeled year-one cost by number of filing states

Each cell is a full year of list price for a seller filing monthly in that many states. “Quoted” means the vendor publishes no price for that scenario — not that it is free or unavailable.

What the published prices show

  • Pricing model matters more than headline price. A seller filing in 10 states pays $2,388 on a flat plan, $6,990 on a per-state entry tier, $6,000 on per-market pricing, and $6,368 once per-filing credits are added — from list prices alone.
  • Per-state and per-filing pricing crosses the flat plan quickly: at 5 states the published per-state entry tier already exceeds a full year of the flat $199/month plan.
  • Only 5 of the 6 vendor plans surveyed publish enough to compute a year-one cost at all. Vertex publishes no price; Avalara, Anrok, and TaxJar publish an entry tier and quote everything above it.
  • Filing volume, not transaction volume, is what compounds on the per-filing model: monthly filing in 10 states is 120 filings a year, and only 2 to 4 of them are included.
  • Flat pricing is not automatically cheaper: at one filing state the published per-state entry tier ($699) and per-market pricing ($600) both come in under the flat plan. The models cross as states are added.
  • Every number here is a published list price, not a negotiated quote. Real quotes commonly differ — which is the point: list prices are the only thing a buyer can compare before talking to sales.

Methodology and limits

The model assumes one return per state per month (the most common assigned cadence), twelve months of subscription, and the vendor's published entry tier. It adds per-filing charges only where the vendor publishes them, and it never estimates a price a vendor has not published.

  • Excluded: registration fees, implementation and onboarding, annual-payment discounts, negotiated discounts, overage above published order tiers, and any add-on module priced separately.
  • Volume: TaxJar's published tiers are quoted at 200 orders/month; higher volumes are quoted, so this model does not extend them.
  • Filing cadence: states assign frequency per account. Quarterly or annual filers on per-filing pricing pay materially less than this monthly model.
  • Prophit.ai: figures come from the same canonical pricing model that drives /pricing, so this study cannot drift from the published plans.
  • Not a quality ranking: price is one input. Coverage, integrations, filing services, and support differ substantially between these products.
